The world is becoming more vulnerable every day as a result of climate change, and more particularly in semi-arid and dry regions with growing acute poverty, water mileage and scarcity, hunger and malnutrition, biodiversity loss and human conflict over limited resources. The drought of 2020-2023 was reported to be the worst in 40 years in Kenya and East Africa leaving 4.35 million people in need of humanitarian assistance (NDMA, 2022). At ACTNOW KENYA, we collaborate with communities and groups facing the most severe effects of climate change as well as leaders in climate space to jointly build resilience.

These communities are disproportionately exposed to extreme weather events, are more reliant on natural resources for livelihoods and water, and least able to cope with, and adapt to negative environmental impacts. On the onset of every drought, malnutrition grows with decline in milk production, kids drop out of school because of hunger, community clashes emerges over water and pasture and animals, both domestic and wild die from limited pasture and human-wildlife conflict. This results to a crises and degrading society. It is therefore critical to support these people in fragile places to adapt their lives to new risks, while transforming communities and natural ecosystems for years to come. That’s why we innovate sustainable and replicable climate solutions that deliver practical, meaningful change at the grassroot level and beyond.

Our Commitment to climate change

We strive by virtue of community impact. The significance of these catastrophic effects of climate change are hard to ignore and assume these communities will manage to cope an adapt by themselves. ACTNOW KENYA acts as steward and linkage for transformation with a sole purpose of uniting these communities with nature, with other communities and fostering healthy societies with access to vital environmental needs. Our approach targets local authorities, donors and other organizations in a collaborative effort to help people in affected communities recovery and live wiser. We have a community of seven schools in Laikipia North where ACTNOW KENYA raises awareness to school kids, women and youth for the past 2 years in these main areas:

  • Climate adaptation

  • Climate mitigation

  • Advocacy for sustainable practices

  • Loss and Damage

  • Young people in climate action

We are an active member of the YOUNGO and Loss and Damage Youth Coalition (LDYC).

on climate change;

Our main work on climate change revolves around climate education and awareness. We provide structured learning materials to kids and community members with simplified climate terminologies and easy-to-use guides.
